Silly film fan, you didn’t think Tribeca was going to sit back and let Venice, TIFF, Telluride, and NYFF have all the fall festival fun, did you? Sure, the annual Tribeca Film Festival is typically in the late spring, but starting this year, the event is ready to branch out into the fall, as well, with the announcement of the Tribeca Fall Preview.

According to the organizers of the event, Tribeca Fall Preview is described as “a season-long festival featuring film premieres, musical performances, and more.” And to kick off the festivities, this year the Fall Preview will begin with the world premiere of “The Many Saints of Newark” on September 22. That’s one hell of a way for the Tribeca folks to begin a new venture, right?
“The Many Saints of Newark,” for those unaware, is the prequel film that is a spinoff of “The Sopranos.” The feature is directed by Alan Taylor, based on a script from ‘Sopranos’ creator David Chase, and tells the story of a young Tony Soprano beginning his career in the criminal underworld during one of the most brutal times in Newark’s history.

“When it premiered on HBO in 1999, ‘The Sopranos’ made an immediate cultural impact and cemented its place as one of television’s greatest dramas,” said Jane Rosenthal and Robert De Niro, Tribeca Festival Co-Founders. “We look forward to launching this exciting new series with ‘The Many Saints of Newark,’ the latest Sopranos story from David Chase and director Alan Taylor.”
Chase added, “I am thrilled to be participating in an event that will call attention to cinema and the arts in NYC, at such a pivotal time. I think it’s just great that Tribeca is hosting this series.”
As of now, it’s unclear what other events will be part of the Tribeca Fall Preview, but if the ‘Many Saints’ premiere is any indication, we could be looking at some exciting announcements forthcoming.
