A new era of “True Detective” is on the way as HBO has recruited Mexican filmmaker Issa López (“Tigers Are Not Afraid”) to write/direct the pilot for “True Detective: Night Country” with Barry Jenkins (“Moonlight,” “The Underground Railroad”) set to produce.
The anticipated project has landed a high-profile actor to the cast as Deadline reports that Oscar-winner Jodie Foster has nabbed a lead role in ‘Night Country,’ marking the actress’ first major adult television role (Foster hasn’t appeared on the small screen since 1975). Foster’s role is that of Detective Liz Danvers, one of the two main roles, and the new setting has been revealed to be Ennis, Alaska.
This certainly places the actress back into the crime thriller genre after a career highlight performance in the fantastic serial killer flick “Silence of The Lambs.” Her recent film roles include “Hotel Artemis,” “Elysium,” and “The Mauritanian.”
Alan Page Arriaga of “Shining Girls” has been added as a co-writer and will also produce. Here is how the outlet describes the newest installment:
The series is centered around Detectives Liz Danvers and Evangeline Navarro who are looking to solve the case of six men that operate the Tsalal Arctic Research Station vanishing without a trace, when the long winter night falls in Ennis, Alaska. The pair will have to confront the darkness they carry in themselves and dig into the haunted truths that lie buried under the eternal ice.
An Alaskan setting for ‘Night Country’ could lead to some interesting opportunities, visually, as the show taking place during the winter should have quite the stark contrast to previous “True Detective” installments.
We’re still waiting on who will end up playing the Detective Navarro role. Hopefully, it’s another veteran actress.
