“Turner & Hooch” is an 80s classic, though 1989 to be specific. Starring Tom Hanks and an ugly dog, a Dogue De Bordeaux to be exact, the movie was a buddy comedy about a detective who must adopt a rambunctious dog to help him find a killer. It’s typical ’80s: introduce a “high concept” into tried and true genre to see what kind of results one can get. In the case of “Turner & Hooch,” something silly, but kinda adorable regardless (remember the dog cop buddy wars? The similarly plotted “K-9” with James Belushi was released three months earlier but isn’t as fondly remembered).

Anyhow, in case you missed it, there’s a reboot that’s coming soon and, Disney+ revealed the official trailer and key art for “Turner & Hooch,” the original series premiering Wednesday, July 21. Here’s the synopsis, but note instead of Tom Hanks, Josh Peck (“The Wackness“), who actually plays Hanks’ son in the film and obviously follows in his law enforcement footsteps.

When an ambitious, buttoned-up U.S. Marshal inherits a big unruly dog, he soon realizes the dog he didn’t want may be the partner he needs. “Turner & Hooch” stars Josh Peck as Scott Turner, son of Detective Scott Turner portrayed by Tom Hanks in the 1989 film of the same name.

The series also stars Carra Patterson as Jessica Baxter, Scott’s brave, street-smart partner; Brandon Jay McLaren as Xavier Wilson, a cool, enigmatic marine-turned-US Marshal; Anthony Ruivivar as Chief James Mendez, Scott’s boss with a secret soft spot for Scott’s new dog, Hooch; Lyndsy Fonseca as Laura Turner, Scott’s sweet, animal-loving sister; Jeremy Maguire as Matthew Garland, Laura’s dog-loving son; and Vanessa Lengies as Erica Mouniere, the quirky head of the U.S. Marshals dog training program. In addition, Becca Tobin recurs as Brooke, Scott’s former flame, and Reginald VelJohnson reprises his role as Mayor David Sutton. Five French Mastiffs also star as Hooch, Scott’s slobbery, loveable French Mastiff.
“Turner & Hooch” is a Disney+ original series produced by 20th Television. Matt Nix is the creator, executive producer, and writer of the series.
