As you’ve likely just recently heard, David Lynch is retiring from movies (again), won’t direct another feature film, and has reignited his love for the medium of television. In an interview with Wired this week, the enigmatic director explained his preference for the small screen.

“A feature film has a beginning, a middle, and an end, then you go out of the theater. Cable television affords the possibility of going into a world and staying there indefinitely. But you have a smaller dynamic range, and you have to compress things. That’s a real hardship,” he said.
When asked what TV he loves, the inscrutable, unpredictable Lynch said, “I love ‘Mad Men’ and ‘Breaking Bad.’ But the only thing I watch now is the news and the Velocity channel. It’s about cars.”

Why return to “Twin Peaks” more than 25 years after the fact? “I would sort of think about it from time to time — about the world and the people and how much I loved both those things. You just picture the characters in the place.”
“Twin Peaks” season three, or the 2017 version, however you want to describe it, is making its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival (though many are betting its “premiere” will happen nearly simultaneously or close to the Showtime premiere). Secrets are being kept close to the chest, and the official Cannes synopsis doesn’t tell us a lot either:
TWIN PEAKS is back, with a story that picks up twenty-five years after the inhabitants of a quaint northwestern town were stunned when their homecoming queen Laura Palmer was shockingly murdered.
Kyle MacLachlan returns as Special Agent Dale Cooper, Angelo Badalamenti has written the music again, and the cast is top notch, with additions such as Laura Dern, Naomi Watts, Michael Cera, Jim Belushi, and Jennifer Jason Leigh joining original cast members Mädchen Amick, Dana Ashbrook, Sherilyn Fenn, Sheryl Lee, Peggy Lipton, James Marshall, Everett McGill, Wendy Robie and more.
Again, details are scarce, but Showtime president David Nevins stated a few months that “the core of it is Agent Cooper’s odyssey back to Twin Peaks.” Cannes runs May 17-28 and you can check out a few new photos of the show below, including Special Agent Dale Cooper’s return to that perplexing Red Room.
“Twin Peaks” arrives on Showtime on May 21st.
