Book to movie or television adaptations are never easy. Translating the page to the conventions of another artist medium often means that compromises need to be made. However, “A Series Of Unfortunate Events” is an exception to the rule. The Netflix show perfectly captured the spirit of the books by Lemony Snicket, and all their weird, darkly comic, and surreal edges. The first season was a surprising treat, and now the next batch of episodes are around the corner.
If you haven’t watched the show — and there’s nothing like cold weather to make this the perfect binge watch — the story follows the orphaned Baudelaire kids, who must continually stay ahead of the scheming Count Olaf, who wants to get his hands on their inheritance. In fact, he wants to kill them. So each episode sees the childrens’ uncle try another new, deadly method to get his hands on them and their money. It’s witty and bleak, hilarious and even heartbreaking at times.
