It’s been a little over ten years since we’ve last seen Venom on the big screen. That appearance, of course, was in Sam Raimi’s infamously bad “Spider-Man 3.” However, after the consistent success of the modern MCU film series and the subsequent twenty (count ‘em, twenty) number one box office openings, Marvel and Sony are now ready to give the character another shot. Enter Ruben Fleischer’s latest, simply titled “Venom.” Following its initial showcase at San Diego Comic-Con, we now have our second official trailer for the film.

Starring Tom Hardy in the titular role, “Venom” follows Eddie Brock, a tenacious journalist who, after an unsuccessful interview with the corrupt Dr. Carlton Drake (played by Riz Ahmed), seemingly becomes infected with a “symbiote,” thus creating an alternate being named Venom. Although it doesn’t reveal much, here’s the official synopsis:
One of Marvel’s most enigmatic, complex and badass characters comes to the big screen, starring Academy Award® nominated actor Tom Hardy as the lethal protector Venom.
In an interview with EW, Hardy finally shed some light on his attraction to his newest role: “There’s a tragic clown element, which I find funny and is harmonious with some of the work that I like to do… Here’s something funny about the circumstances of having a gift but it’s a tragic gift. It’s a superpower you don’t really want, but at the same time, you love it. It makes you feel special. He’s a reluctant hero and an anti-hero.”
Alongside Hardy and Ahmed, “Venom” features Michelle Williams, Jenny Slate, Woody Harrelson, Scott Haze, and Reid Scott. From producers Avi Arad, Amy Pascal, and Matt Tolmach, and scripters Kelly Marcel, Will Beall, Scott Rosenberg, and Jeff Pinkner, “Venom” is slated for an early fall release – hitting theaters on October 5.
