The long wait is over, and with an official trailer finally here, and a Cannes premiere almost a certainty at this point considering it hits theaters in France in the midst of the fest, the marketing push for "On The Road" is now begining in earnest, and a new poster has arrived.
Interestingly, it doesn't center on any of the young leads — Sal Paradise (Sam Riley), Dean Moriarty (Garrett Hudlund) or Marylou (Kristen Stewart) — but instead on Old Bull Lee, the William S. Burroughs surrogate played by Viggo Mortensen, one of the many folks Jack Kerouac and Neal Cassady encountered on their journey (“let’s just say now, he was a teacher” Kerouac wrote). And as Mortensen told us last year, he actually saw parallels between his character here and Sigmund Freud in "A Dangerous Method."
"Both Freud and Burroughs were mentors in a sense. [People] went to visit Burroughs and he would share his books with them and they loved to pick his brain when he was down in Louisiana. They all came down to have a good time but also because they knew they could ask lots of questions and sort of glean a few pearls of wisdom from this crazy old guy," he explained. "He seemed like an old guy to them, he wasn’t that old at the time, he was 10, 15 years older. Just like Freud was older than Jung."
The Walter Salles directed film is slated for a U.K. release on September 21st, though no U.S. distributor or date has been set yet. Full poster below. [Facebook/ComingSoon]
