Vince Vaughn is continuing to try and move hard away from the comedy work that has been the bread and butter of his career. Last year he got gloomy for “True Detective” season two, this spring he has feet in both comedy and drama with the thriller “Term Life,” and now he’s lining up a very promising project with a director who has already wowed genre fans.
Last fall, S. Craig Zahler unleashed his unhinged western/horror flick “Bone Tomahawk,” which we called “hugely enjoyable.” And now the director is getting his next movie ready with the awesomely titled action thriller “Brawl In Cell Block 99,” and Vaughn is going to lead the charge. The actor will be playing Bradley, an auto mechanic turned drug courier, who gets caught in a gunfight between the cops and his criminal buddies, and then tossed in jail, where a whole new battle unfolds. Yep, we’re in.
Production begins on ’99’ at the end of summer, and given the cast of Zahler managed to corral for “Bone Tomahawk” (Kurt Russell, Patrick Wilson, Matthew Fox, Richard Jenkins) we can’t wait to see who he lands this time. [EW]
