Viola Davis Developing An Amazon Streaming Series Based On Breakout Genre Film ‘Fast Color’

Over the last six months or so, we’ve been trying to get people to take a look at the pseudo-superhero film “Fast Color.” The film, which stars the incredible Gugu Mbatha-Raw, follows a woman with superpowers that is on the run and has to leave her daughter behind to protect her. The film is a really great change of pace for those that want a bit more character depth in their genre films.

Well, according to Deadline, Viola Davis and Amazon agree. The actress-turned-producer has signed a deal with the streaming giant to adapt the Julia Hart film for a new series. Davis is teaming with Julius Tennon and their JuVee Productions to develop the series along with the original film’s writers Hart and Jordan Horowitz.

“Since the day we premiered at SXSW, there has been an incredible outpouring of grassroots support for this film,” Hart said. “We couldn’t be more excited about the opportunity to continue living in this world, with these women, and can’t imagine better partners than Viola and Julius and Mickey and Pete and everyone at Amazon.”

“Our commitment at JuVee as artists is what fuels our imagination. We want to play. We want to challenge. We want to ask, “What if….,” said producers Davis and Tennon. “‘Fast Color’ allows us to live in a world that fullfills all of the above. It’s a story and world that reminds us that not only do we have a soul, but we have extraordinary, unlikely women who fiercely protect it.”

In our review of the film, we said, “There should be more films like ‘Fast Color.’ Movies that demonstrate that you don’t need a giant budget or decades of established IP to do superhero or sci-fi well on the big screen.” The review also mentions how the film sets up the idea of a sequel, which is likely something that will be explored in the new series.

No word on a release date for the “Fast Color” TV series, but if anything, we hope that this announcement encourages people to check out the film however they can. You won’t be disappointed.
