‘WandaVision’ Will Mash Up “American Sitcoms” and “Epic” Marvel Movies

Among the more unexpected developments regarding the looming launch of Disney+ in November—and the Marvel TV shows that will be exclusive to the service—is the fascination with “WandaVision.” Just what, exactly, is it?

The series sees Paul Bettany and Elizabeth Olsen returning to the shows of their Avengers, Vision and Scarlet Witch, respectively. For fans who have kept up with the Marvel Cinematic Universe so far, some of the eyebrow-raising begins with that very concept, seeing as Thanos annihilated Vision as the Mad Titan retrieved the final Infinity Stone in “Infinity War.” A tease about the series’s setting—it’s reportedly going to unfold in the 1950s—leads to just as many questions, but it also fuels a theory that “WandaVision’s” foundation could lie in meddling with alternative timelines.

Talking with Entertainment Weekly, Bettany and Olsen provided some more hints of information to hold us over until the show’s expected launch in the spring of 2021. Perhaps most enticing is the suggestion that the series will dabble in a genre we wouldn’t usually associate with the MCU at large.

“It is a mash-up between American sitcoms throughout the decades and Marvel film with these characters,” Olsen said. Bettany added that this is only the starting point, noting that the show “sort of snowballs into an epic Marvel movie that you’ve grown to know or love.”

These comments might also lead some to think that “WandaVision” will only be a limited series event. No matter how the show unfolds, one thing is for sure: we’ll finally be able to spend some meaningful time with a pair of MCU characters that never quite felt like they came into their own in the films.

“I think there’s been a real progression in the characters and the relationship and to actually be able to spend time on that,” Bettany said. “The scripts we are reading so far are so bonkers.”

“WandaVision” will be directed by Matt Shakman (“Fargo” and “Game Of Thrones“) and Jac Schaeffer (“Black Widow“) will act as the head writer. The MCU’s Infinity Saga has been a worthwhile, satisfying, and bonkers project over a decade into it, so if that same ambition is being translated to the small screen, “WandaVision” will be a series to look forward to—and theorize about.
