Oh boy, here we go again. There is nothing fanboys love to debate more than the merits of DC versus Marvel movies, which is a bit silly considering they are in the big, mainstream, blockbuster sandbox. Sure, one could argue the approach of Zack Snyder and co. is a bit more po-faced than Joss Whedon‘s quip-fests, but let’s face it: at the end of the day, both "Man Of Steel" and "The Avengers" reveled in CGI fulled, big city mayhem. But the CEO of Warner Bros., Kevin Tsujihara, who has a mega-slate of DC comics, world-building movies on the horizon, wants to make a clear distinction between his expensive tentpoles and Marvel’s big expensive tentpoles.
“The worlds of DC are very different. They’re steeped in realism, and they’re a little bit edgier than Marvel’s movies,” he said during the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media & Telecom Conference. We’re sure the middle aged folks attending the conference were thrilled by this proclamation. Rather, these investors are less concerned with the artistic aspect, than whether or not the bubble will burst on the superhero genre. Tsujihara doesn’t think so, explaining that it’s about knowing how to use these properties to the best advantage.
“The key thing is that the movies and the television shows and the games, everything looks very different… you have to be able to take advantage of the diversity of these characters,” he explained.
That doesn’t quite explain how audiences won’t fatigue from a new hero in tights arriving each month, but Tsujihara thinks if the shows and films are different enough, the interest will be there. Thoughts? Share ’em below.
