“I don’t think that’s ever going to happen,” Guillermo del Toro recently told Yahoo! Movies about a recent rumor that had a crossover happening between "Pacific Rim," "Godzilla," and King Kong. However, two of those franchise are gearing up to assemble into all out cinematic brawl.
Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. have announced a new cinematic franchise featuring giant monsters, both old and new. Oh joy. According to the studio, the monsters will become towering heroes for a new generation, revealing a mythology that brings together Godzilla and King Kong in an ecosystem of other giant super-species. Cool, I guess? Just because you can bring properties you own together, doesn’t mean you should.
At any rate, the plan is "Kong: Skull Island" to get the ball rolling on March 10, 2017, "Godzilla 2" to drop June 2, 2018 and for "Godzilla Vs. Kong" to arrive in 2020. And by the way, that’s not all, as the studio says that Rodan, Mothra, and King Ghidorah may also enter this new universe as well.
So, will monsters be the new superheroes? WB hopes so.
