Just last week, Zack Snyder randomly called in to a Detroit radio station to defend the cinematic incarnation of Aquaman. While the filmmaker refused to say whether or not the character would appear in "Batman v. Superman: Dawn Of Justice" or would be saved for "Justice League," it’s safe to say that Aquaman, set to be played by Jason Momoa, is a big part of Warner Brothers‘ superheroic future.
THR reports that the studio is proceeding with an "Aquaman" solo movie, teaming up Will Beall and Kurt Johnstad to pen the script. Or more accurately, both writers will be penning individual scripts, which suggests WB has some options as they begin to figure out which movies to slot on their DC calendar extending to 2020.
Both screenwriters are curious choices. "Gangster Squad" scribe Beall actually drafted one of the early version of "Justice League" that was seemingly discarded before David S. Goyer and Chris Terrio ("Argo") took over. Meanwhile, Johnstad is a Snyder stable writer, penning "300," "300: Rise Of An Empire" and the developing war drama "The Last Photograph," a project long attached to Snyder.
But which of these writers will have the vision to make Aquaman a viable big screen hero? Either WB has heard two interesting pitches from two different writers, or the studio is trying to cover their bases now that their release dates have been announced. Of all the possible franchises in the upcoming DC Cinematic Universe, Aquaman, and not, say, a solo Batman movie or "Man Of Steel 2," or even "Wonder Woman" is in motion first. Then again, Aquaman is arguably the most difficult of these characters to get right for a movie, so starting early may not be a bad plan. Thoughts? Should someone call James Cameron now?
