Did you hear that cacophonous rumble coming from San Diego yesterday? What you heard was the sound of folks freaking out over the footage screened from Warner Bros.‘ upcoming "Mad Max: Fury Road" (recap the coverage here) at Comic-Con. But if you couldn’t be there, don’t worry! A trailer has now dropped online.
What director George Miller has done with “Mad Max: Fury Road” sounds pretty ambitious and inventive. He’s rebooted/restarted his own franchise in his distinct style. He’s obviously traded Mel Gibson for Tom Hardy, and the director told us in 2012 that the redo would be a “new interpretation” of the story. And if you’re paying attention to some of the clues online, it seems more than likely that Miller has borrowed elements of his franchise’s history and discarded others.
It very much appears that “Mad Max: Fury Road” picks up right after the events of “The Road Warrior” (or even midway through that film) and then spins a new history that includes Charlize Theron‘s group of female tribal warriors. Miller and Hardy keep hinting that the Max Rockatansky character has gone through “a lot of pain” and they’re clearly alluding to the character (a synopsis of the first filmcan be read here). This movie even recasts one of the old villains from the 1979 film as the new villain of “Fury Road.” But they’re not the same character. Got that?
"The film is going to be epic," Jasin Boland, the photographer behind the recently released production film stills told the Sydney Morning Herald recently. "What [production designer] Colin Gibson and George have done creating that world is so exciting for people involved in the process. It quite possibly could reinvigorate the whole live-action action film again. And Tom is intense. He’s going to be a great Mad Max."
And so the Comic-Con teaser trailer has arrived, and it indeed looks epic and intense. The film has instantly become the most anticipated blockbuster of 2015. Game changing even? Too early to tell, but we’re certainly excited. Starring Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron, along with Nicholas Hoult, Hugh Keays-Byrne, Nathan Jones, Zoe Kravitz, Riley Keough, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and more, “Mad Max: Fury Road” opens in theaters (3D and 2D) on May 15, 2015. Watch the trailer below.
A new synopsis has arrived as well.
