Well, here’s something for the die-hards: The Film Theorists have recently put together a video detailing the origins of some of the lesser-known characters in the “Star Wars” universe, some of whom are alluded to in this little movie that just came out called “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” There’s plenty to nerd out on over here, even for someone like myself — a pronounced “Star Wars” novice who nevertheless enjoyed the hell out of J.J. Abrams’ punchy, delirious pop epic. However, for fans who pride themselves on their knowledge of the franchise’s many ins and outs, consider this an early Christmas present.
I, for one, wasn’t aware that Joe Johnston (“Jurassic Park III,” “Captain America: The First Avenger”) sketched the early blueprints for what would become Boba Fett’s uniform, nor was I privy to the many Ewok-related spinoffs that popped up in the wake of ‘Return of the Jedi.’ You’ll also get a glimpse of the misbegotten “Star Wars” animated holiday special, a property that many of the franchise faithful hold in contempt (regardless, it’s a fascinating cultural artifact, and one that’s very much of its time). Also, for those of you who aren’t sure what a “jizz-wailer” is, the video does provide a definition. Hint: it has a connection to Max Rebo and the cantina band, as well as the extended musical universe of “Star Wars” that is more deeply explored in the novelizations.
Check out the video below. “The Force Awakens” is currently playing, most likely in a theatre near you.
