Call it the Super Bowl for cinephiles. Last night, movie fans from around the world stayed up until all hours of the night as the Oscars once again rolled out a polished, professional, and way too long ceremony, honoring the finest film accomplishments over the past year. But if the show might be sleepy, the winners certainly aren’t, and there were more than a few memorable moments to be found in this year’s speeches.
J.K. Simmons got the ball rolling with his "call your parents" missive after winning for "Whiplash." John Legend and Common used their moment to address the alarming rate of incarceration of black men in the United States, while Patricia Arquette called out for wage equality and women’s rights in her stirring speech. Meanwhile, Graham Moore used his moment to share a very personal story. And a lighter note, "Ida" director Pawel Pawlikowski set the tone for the evening for just totally ignoring the walk-off music.
Revisit those moments and check out all the major speeches from Oscar night below.
