After an underwhelming trailer and flashy set photos, we thought the film adaptation of Max Barry’s novel “Syrup,” might show up at Sundance. It didn’t, but along the way, Magnolia Pictures landed the film and, with a theatrical and OnDemand release around they corner, they’ve also dropped a brand new trailer.
Directed by Aram Rappaport and featuring “Evil Dead” star Shiloh Fernandez, Amber Heard and Kellan Lutz, the film looks to posit itself as a sleek, winking satire on the advertising and business worlds. As the trailer shows, Fernandez plays Scat (yes, that’s his name), who brainstorms a soda beverage called Fukk Cola and bands together, both romantically and professionally, with 6 (Heard), the production manager at Coke.
Yes, that’s her name as well, and speaking of promotional attempts aimed to please, the trailer doesn’t exactly sell the film’s charms. Amidst the rampant dolly whip-pans and sarcastic line readings from its young cast, the project carries a shambling quality. But maybe we’re wrong about this? Decide for yourself with the trailer below before “Syrup” hits OnDemand May 2nd and theaters on June 7th.
