Can't be at SXSW? Well, this morning we'll bring a little bit from a couple of the festival favorites to you to check out, along with a trailer for a horror flick that has taken nearly three years to hit U.S. screens.
First up, William Friedkin's "Killer Joe" is as great and totally fucking nuts as you've been hearing, and at the enter of it all is a sterling turn by Matthew McConaughey. Going as far away from anything he's ever done before, he plays an ex-cop turned hitman who holds a young woman as collateral when her brother hires him to kill their mother for the insurance money. It's wickedly simmering stew of violence and sexual tension that boils over with a third act that needs to be seen to be believed. This clip is from early in the movie where the deal is being talked over, and then below, you'll see a pretty great poster for the movie and yeah, that fried chicken actually does come into play into the movie. And it might make stay away from KFC forever. "Killer Joe" hits later this year and is currently tagged with an NC-17 rating.
LCD Soundsystem may be dead, but they go out with a bang in the concert movie/documentary "Shut Up And Play The Hits." Premiering at Sundance in January and screening at SXSW later this week, it's both a chronicle of the band's last big blowout at Madison Square Garden and an intimate portrait of frontman/founder James Murphy coming to grips with age and the end of a personal musical era. Looks pretty damn great, and this clip does a solid job of showing the balance of elements in the film. No release dates yet.
Lastly, nearly three years after it premiered at TIFF, Sean Byrne's "The Loved Ones" will be making it to U.S. theaters. The film stars Xavier Samuel and Robin McLeavy in a story about a young woman who gets rejected by a boy she asks to prom, and rounds up her Dad to help her create the night of her dreams — whether the young man wants to or not. And yeah, things get bloody. The teaser ( via ComingSoon) is a pretty nice little preview of the skewed madness to come. The movie arrives in theaters this June via some complicated request system we're not going to detail, but that you can read about here. Watch below.
