With the Toronto International Film Festival underway, the fall movie season—as well as awards season—is officially upon us. Over the next eleven days, we’ll be bringing you our reviews and more coverage from ground. Since the festival has only just begun and we’ve already told you about some of our most anticipated films of the festival, let’s take a moment to get a quick peek at some of the other films premiering.
First up is a clip (via Vice) from “The Unknown Known,” Errol Morris’ new documentary on Donald Rumsfeld. Just shy of three minutes, the clip focuses on the memos the former Secretary of Defense wrote in advance of the Iraq War. The film, his follow-up to 2010’s “Tabloid,” looks to be a nice companion piece to Morris’ Oscar-winning “The Fog Of War,” which also focused on a controversial former Secretary of Defense, Robert S. McNamara. “The Unknown Known” premieres this Sunday at the Bell Lightbox.
Next up is Canadian raconteur Bruce McDonald’s newest film, “The Husband.” In advance of the dark comedy’s premiere next Monday, Twitch has dropped the first trailer online. The film follows co-writer Maxwell McCabe-Loko as Henry, a man whose wife, a former teacher, is in jail for sleeping with a fourteen-year-old student, leaving Henry to raise their infant son alone. He loathes his ad agency job—and his co-workers even more. Moreover, the burden of single-parenting has essentially cut Henry off from his friends, leaving him to stew. Henry has kept a lid on things so far, but as his wife’s release looms, he finds it increasingly difficult to contain himself. “The Husband” has its world premiere at the Scotiabank theater this Monday.
Empire has the first trailer for the Paul Potts—the first winner of “Britain’s Got Talent”—biopic “One Chance.” With the Weinstein Company behind the tee of this inspirational story—poor unnoticed schlub makes it big by embracing his talented pipes—and their batting average with films that have a decidedly British subject matter, the film may be one to watch in the long run. The David Frankel-helmed “One Chance” premieres this Monday at the Winter Garden Theater.
Speaking of inspirational stories, a trailer for the Christina Ricci-starring “Around The Block” has arrived online. Written and directed by first-time Australian filmmaker Sarah Spillane, the film follows Ricci as an American teacher who takes a troubled inner-city Sydney youth under her wing. “Around The Block” premieres this Friday at the Scotiabank.
A little over two years since “This Is Not A Film” premiered at Cannes, Iranian director Jafar Panahi is back with “Closed Curtain,” co-directed by his frequent collaborator Kambozia Partovi. Though the new trailer is relatively brief, it’s clear the new film is much darker than the much-lauded 2011 film. The film premieres tonight at the Lightbox with screenings throughout the weekend.
