*While the following is part of the new Marvel movie’s marketing campaign, folks looking to avoid character cameo spoilers for “Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness” might want to turn around. Final warning that there are minor spoilers ahead.*
Next month sees another massive installment in Marvel’s entry into the Multiverse. “Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness” finds the title character encounters an evil variant of himself along with new characters such as Wanda Maximoff, America Chavez, and The Illuminati; the latter might have greater consequences to the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
A new TV spot has made its way online thanks to Marvel (see below), which has more voice-over from Patrick Stewart‘s mutant character Professor X along with showing off —final spoiler alert!— a brief glimpse of what appears to be Hayley Atwell‘s Captain Carter character. It’s the first time the studio has confirmed the rumors that her variant from the “What…If” series would be in the sequel helmed by Sam Raimi.
Also, IMDB has posted a colorful action-packed clip (see below) from the film that sees Strange fight Gargantos, the interdimensional Lovecraftian villain that is taking the place of more notable Shuma-Gorath. From the new footage, it looks like Professor Charles Xavier is going to be using his signature yellow hover chair— a key design feature from the Jim Lee-era comic books that was also used in the 1990s animated series which aired on Fox Television. The exact animated series is getting a revival from Marvel Studios with “X-Men ’97” expected to debut on Disney+ sometime in 2023 and certainly makes the case that the seminal Lee version of those “X-Men” character designs might be re-used for their MCU reboot.
What we don’t know at the moment is: will Stewart be the same main version of Xavier from the 20th Century Fox films? Or is he simply playing a variant one-off (perhaps the live-action version of the aforementioned animated series) for the film to help prepare audiences for the new “X-Men” cast? Either way, variants of this kind are easily disposable, so who knows, we could end up seeing some wild deaths of some of the many rumored cameos.
“Doctor Strange 2′ will portal into theaters on May 6 and you can watch that new footage below plus a new featurette focusing on Wanda/Scarlet Witch.
