When Jim Jarmusch‘s “Only Lovers Left Alive” was missing from the initial lineup announcement for the Cannes Film Festival, we were a bit bummed out, but about a week later, it was slotted as a late addition to the Competition lineup, adding another great title to an already stacked slate. There hasn’t been much thus far from the movie itself, with the excitement resting solely on the cast (Tilda Swinton, John Hurt, Mia Wasikowska, Anton Yelchin, Tom Hiddleston) and the fact that it’s about vampires. But now, two clips from the movie have landed providing the first look at ‘Lovers,’ but it remains intriguingly enigmatic.
The movie follows Adam (Hiddleston), an underground musician, deeply depressed by the direction of human activities, who reunites with his centuries long lover Eve (Swinton), but finds their relationship interrupted by her wild sister, Ava (Wasikowska). So yeah, sounds pretty great and in these two clips, we see the passion between Adam and Eve and just how quickly the free-spirited Ava grates. These are just very brief teasers, but they definitely keep our excitement stoked and Hiddleston as a pained, goth-ed out rocker is kinda great.
Speaking of music, Dutch minimalist composer and lute player Jozef Van Wissem (who has collaborated with Jarmusch on three albums) scored the film, with the director’s own band Squrl (formerly known as Bad Rabbit), also contributing some tunes.
We can’t wait to see how this turns out. “Only Lovers Left Alive” screens in Cannes on Saturday, May 25th.
