Watch: First 7 Minutes Of Ethan Hawke's Twisty Sci-Fi 'Predestination'

PredestinationWant to break your brain a bit with some sci-fi? Well, help is on the way in the early part of 2015, but if you’re not sure if you want to roll the dice on "Predestination," here’s the first seven minutes to give you a taste.

The film comes from directors Peter and Michael Spierig, and follows a Temporal Agent (Ethan Hawke, who worked with the directors on "Daybreakers") who is sent on a series of time-traveling missions to prevent future killers from committing crimes. He embarks on one final assignment to capture an elusive foe and prevent a major attack in which thousands of lives will be lost. It’s adapted from Robert A. Heinlein‘s (“Starship Troopers” and “Stranger in a Strange Land”) classic 1959 short story “All You Zombies" (read it here). The film also stars Sarah Snook and Noah Taylor.

The clip holds pretty good promise, and the film develops a rhythm that is both to-the-point and subtly abstract. We get a great sense of the plot, but it’s hard to trust anything you see. Also, I’m definitely getting a “Looper” vibe here. Let’s hope the other 90 minutes live up to this. "Predestination" opens on January 9th.
