When "Finding Nemo" premieres theatrically in a newly 3D-ized form in September, it will come with a special treat – a brand new "Toy Story" short called "Partysaurus Rex." As we detailed last week, the plot concerns our favorite nebbish dinosaur, Tex (Wallace Shawn), who befriends Bonnie's bath toys and reshapes himself as a party-starting club impresario. Today Disney has released the first clip from the highly anticipated short (the third in a series of "Toy Story" short films that included the Ken-and-Barbie-centered "Hawaiian Vacation" and "Small Fry," about discarded kids meal toys), and it looks like soapy, sudsy fun.
The brief 30-second clip shows the beginning of the big splashy party with Rex, emboldened with the fact that he actually has arms (that little slap of determination when his claws come together is a terrifically funny detail), getting the water started in the bathtub. The bath toys, in turn, are incredibly appreciative and provide Rex with his new club kid look – dreadlocks, beads, and a Viking helmet. That's about it.
Still – the visuals are promising and Rex has been an unsung highlight of the "Toy Story" films, thanks largely to Wallace Shawn's impeccable vocal characterization. We're excited to see the character take center stage and the concept behind the short is agreeably loopy. This teaser gives a nice sampling of the tone of the short – bouncy and bubbly.
The other thing you can get a taste of in the clip is the new music composed by electronica artist BT, who has worked on everything from "Go" to "Monster." Here he seems to have composed a winningly upbeat and colorful number – quite frankly we can't wait to hear the rest.
Thankfully, we won't have to wait long. "Finding Nemo" in 3D hits on September 14th. [Rope Of Silicon]
