In an alternate world, “I Saw The Light,” the biopic of country star Hank Williams, premiered a trailer months ago, after rave reviews out of the fall festivals, and would currently be hoping for awards wins for its stars. Unfortunately, that’s not quite how it worked: Though stars Tom Hiddleston and Elizabeth Olsen picked up glowing notices, the film itself, directed by Marc Abraham, was less warmly received (here’s our own review), and Sony Pictures Classics decided to push it out of the crowded awards season.
But the release date, next March, is now closing in, and EW have premiered the first full trailer for the movie. It’s our best look at Hiddleston in a character that’s somewhat against type for the young British actor, and both he and co-star Olsen look very impressive, though the movie itself seems to hit all the clichéd music-biopic beats (we’re a little disappointed no one yells “The wrong kid died!” at any point). Nevertheless, it does look very handsome.
Were the festival critics too harsh on the movie? Would Hiddleston and Olsen have stood a chance at nomination? We’ll find out when the movie bows in theaters on March 25th. Watch the trailer below.
