Watch: First Trailer For 'Colonia' Starring Emma Watson & Daniel Brühl

Emma Watson & Daniel Brühl, ColoniaFor someone who flirted with the idea of retiring from acting once “Harry Potter” was over, Emma Watson’s been building quite the interesting career since. She first showed her non-Hermione potential in “The Perks Of Being A Wallflower,” and since then has built up an impressive resume, working with Sofia Coppola on “The Bling Ring,” Seth Rogen on “This Is The End,” Darren Aronofsky on “Noah,” and coming up, Bill Condon on “Beauty & The Beast” and James Ponsoldt in “The Circle.”

More imminently from the young actress is a film that just premiered at TIFF, “Colonia.” From German director Florian Gallenberger, it’s set in 1974 Chile in the midst of Augusto Pinochet’s coup, and sees Watson as a flight attendant who infiltrates a sect run by a former Nazi (Michael Nyqvist) in order to rescue her captive boyfriend (Daniel Bruhl).

It’s essentially a genre thriller with based-in-fact political trappings, and you can get your first glimpse of it below, thanks to a trailer dug up by Latino Review. We’re going to stay cautious for a bit, especially after seeing a Hollywood Reporter review that calls it “poorly plotted and shoddily made,” but it’s interesting to see Watson stretching herself once again. There’s no news on when this might hit theaters, but you can have a look at the trailer below, along with an official synopsis.

Colonia tells the story of Lena and Daniel, a young couple who become entangled in the Chilean military coup of 1973. Daniel is abducted by Pinochet’s secret police and Lena tracks him to a sealed off area in the south of the country called Colonia Dignidad. The Colonia presents itself as a charitable mission run by lay preacher Paul Schäfer but, in fact, is a place nobody ever escaped from. Lena decides to join the cult in order to find Daniel.
