“It’s storytelling. You’re going to get the audience used to the experience of it,” Tom Cruise told USA Today this week in advance of today’s trailer for “Edge Of Tomorrow.” “And then you get to have them laugh with it.” Does he mean audiences are going to laugh at/with the fact that Cruise’s character dies over and over again, to the point that the Doug Liman-directed film already has a built-in and ready hashtag (#LiveDieRepeat—we know you’re just dying to use it).
Well, the first real look at the movie is here so you’ll just have to tell us how it all works for you. But in case you’re thinking, “Hey, didn’t Cruise just make the sci-fi ‘Oblivion‘?” the actor basically says two high-concept pictures back to back was coincidence and timing. “Look, I make all different kinds of movies,” he says. “When Doug (Liman) came to me and said what the story was and the design, I thought, ‘This is going to be cool. It’s going to be very different than anything I’ve done before.’ “
Well, we’ll give him that. Here’s the official synopsis:
The epic action of “Edge of Tomorrow” unfolds in a near future in which an alien race has hit the Earth in an unrelenting assault, unbeatable by any military unit in the world. Lt. Col. Bill Cage (Cruise) is an officer who has never seen a day of combat when he is unceremoniously dropped into what amounts to little more than a suicide mission. Killed within minutes, Cage now finds himself inexplicably thrown into a time loop—forcing him to live out the same brutal combat over and over, fighting and dying again…and again. But with each battle, Cage becomes able to engage the adversaries with increasing skill, alongside Special Forces warrior Rita Vrataski (Blunt). And, as Cage and Rita take the fight to the aliens, each repeated encounter gets them one step closer to defeating the enemy.
Co-starring Emily Blunt, Marianne Jean-Baptiste and Bill Paxton, “Edge of Tomorrow” opens on June 6, 2014. Watch below.
