The year may be winding down, but a name you’ll want to remember in 2015 is Desiree Akhavan. She’s the writer/director/star behind "Appropriate Behavior," a New York City set rom-com that defies the conventions of what the words "New York City set rom-com" bring to mind. It’s a movie that picked up strong buzz out of Sundance earlier this year, and let’s hope that carries over when the movie hits cinemas.
The film sets itself apart right from the get-go, centering on Shirin, a Persian, bisexual Brooklyn gal in the midst of a breakup with her girlfriend Maxine. What follows is really how Shirin gets on (and gets it on) in the aftermath, all while her family, in the dark about her sexuality, prepares for her brother’s wedding. It’s a movie we called "funny, unique, and…supremely satisfying" in our review, so put this one on your list.
