On August 5, 2010, a cave-in at a San José copper mine in Chile trapped 33 workers 2,300 feet below the Earth, and three miles from the entrance. Miraculously, no one was killed, and 69 days later, everyone made it to the surface alive to be reunited with their families and loved ones. The story was an immediate media sensation. So it naturally follows that a star-studded movie version would arrive. The first trailer for "The 33" is here, and it’s actually not too bad.
Starring Antonio Banderas, Lou Diamond Phillips, Rodrigo Santoro, Juliette Binoche, Gabriel Byrne, Juan Pablo Raba, Kate del Castillo, and more, with Patricia Riggen directing. The film looks to be a heart-swelling account of the real story, showing the fortitude of the trapped workers, and their relatives praying for them to return home safely. Here’s the full synopsis:
Based on the real-life event – when a Chilean gold and copper mine collapses, a rock twice the size of the empire state building traps 33 miners a mile and a half underground for 69 days. The miners struggled through starvation and depression as their families fought to keep rescue teams searching for them, culminating in the unprecedented and miraculous rescue of all 33 men. A journey to hell and back, the story is taught with suspense and full of tenderness, as well as an unforgettable cast of characters.
