Watch: First Trailer For Pixar's Ambitious 'Inside Out'

Inside OutIt’s been a while since Pixar delivered something worth getting excited over. "Cars 2," "Brave" and "Monsters University" all varied in quality, but none come close to touching the animation studio’s most revered work. But hopes are high for the upcoming "Inside Out," and the first trailer has arrived.

Directed by Pete Docter ("Up," "Monsters Inc."), the movie boasts an interesting premise, taking place inside the mind of an 11-year-old girl named Riley (Kaitlyn Dias). “In truth, Riley is not our main character; she is our setting,” Docter said earlier this year at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival (via Variety). He added, “It’s based on a strong emotional experience I had watching my daughter grow up. There is something that is lost when you grow up.”

Indeed, this will be one of the few movies that makes emotions actual characters, with Fear (Bill Hader), Sadness (Phyllis Smith), Joy (Amy Poehler), Disgust (Mindy Kaling) and Anger (Lewis Black) all getting screen time. And Docter says the movie is much more complicated than surface feeling.

“I thought I was making a film about my daughter, but the truth is, I’m more making a film about myself in relation to my daughter and understanding that," he explained. "The film is told from a parent’s point of view, and being a parent, I just sort of slipped into that, I guess. It’s definitely made me think again about the way I grew up, my adolescence, and even on a day-to-day basis what I’m doing and why.”

Sounds ambitious and fascinating, and we’re eager to see how it’s all put together "Inside Out" opens on June 19, 2015. Watch the trailer below, along with a teaser for the short "Lava" that will screen in front of it.
