Watch: First Trailer For 'Planes: Fire & Rescue' Tries To Heat Up Your Emotions

Planes: Fire & Rescue

So, the “Cars” spinoff is now its very own franchise. And if you’re wondering who on Earth bothered to see “Planes,” a lot of people did, with the modestly budgeted animated movie pulling in over $210 million worldwide. (It nearly cracked $100 million domestically alone.) So “Planes: Fire & Rescue” was inevitable, but that still doesn’t explain the first trailer.

You might think the target for “Planes: Fire & Rescue” would be kids, but maybe we’re wrong. Instead, this spot offers up a soaring MOR FM radio song about flying high and feelings or something, in what plays like an elegy for the heroes that risk their lives every day fighting fires. But the thing is, this is an animated movie with characters named Dusty and Dipper, so there’s a weird disconnect going on that’s not helped by the fact this song is brutally awful. As for the plot, it basically finds former racer Dusty, who is now a firefighter getting into adventures or whatever. The bottom line is that it doesn’t really matter. Parents need something to bring their kids to, so as long as there are cute animated vehicles talking to teach other, people will go.

“Planes: Fire & Rescue” opens on July 18th. Watch below.
