Surprise! A new Spike Lee joint is ready, coming into theaters in the middle of Oscar season. Amazon Studios came on board to finance Lee’s “Chi-Raq” earlier this year, but few thought the drama would be released in 2015. It’s a movie that looks at the widespread murder in Chicago —though it’s also said to include comedy and musical elements— and Roadside Attractions and Lionsgate recently stepped up to partner with Amazon to release the film theatrically. Here’s the official synopsis:
Chi-Raq is a modern day adaptation of the ancient Greek play “Lysistrata” by Aristophanes. After the murder of a Child by a stray bullet, a group of women led by Lysistrata organize against the on-going violence in Chicago’s Southside creating a movement that challenges the nature of race, sex and violence in America and around the world.
