Coming out of this year’s Sundance Film Festival, there weren’t many movies getting as much buzz as “The Big Sick.” After a bidding war ended with Amazon Studios spending $12 million on the film, everyone has been waiting for their chance to watch the movie. Well, the wait is almost over!
In the first trailer for “The Big Sick,” viewers are introduced to Kumail Nanjiani’s character as he navigates life dealing with his Muslim family and his desire to marry an American woman instead of an arranged marriage. Of course, the journey isn’t that simple, with ups, downs, and a major illness thrown in for good measure. However, viewers can see immediately that this is a film that is full of heart and will be one of the must-see films of the summer (read our review from Sundance).

“The Big Sick” is written by Nanjiani and his wife, Emily V. Gordon, based on their own relationship and Nanjiani’s relationship with his family back in Pakistan. The film is the first starring role for Nanjiani, who is perhaps best known for his work on the hit HBO comedy series “Silicon Valley” and his stand-up comedy. Joining Nanjiani in the cast is indie darling Zoe Kazan, portraying Emily. Lending his hand as producer is Judd Apatow, who worked with Gordon and Nanjiani for years on the script, getting it ready for production.
“The Big Sick” opens June 23.
