Music has probably sparked more youthful rebellion than any factor aside from straight up puberty, and “Northern Soul,” the directorial debut of noted fashion photographer Elaine Constantine, tells the story of one of those adventures. The movie opens next month in the U.K., and a new trailer just dropped.
“Northern Soul” tells the story of two young friends, weighed down by the dull life in their small, blue-collar town. As many young men do, they dream of something much grander, and when they discover American soul music, their lives and their paths are forever changed. From this trailer, the film looks like a tale of following your dreams and your passions, and both the joys and consequences of those choices. Not the most original plot, to be sure, but working within those confines, there is definitely room to create an engaging movie. And if the music is anywhere near as good as what’s in this trailer, that alone might make this worth a look. Here’s the official synopsis:

Northern Soul was phenomenally popular with British youths in the 1970s, taking the North of the country by storm. Northern Soul the film intends to appeal to those generations of fans while attracting a modern audience who can relate to youth culture from another era. If you were there, you’ll know. If you weren’t there, you’ll wish you had been.
Newcomers Joshua Whitehouse and Elliot James Langride play the main duo in “Northern Soul,” but the film also stars Steve Coogan, Josh Thompson, Lisa Stansfield, Ricky Tomlinson, Christian McKay and Antonia Thomas. The movie opens in U.K. theaters on October 17th and hits Blu-ray, DVD and Digital Download a few days later on October 20th.
