With so many sidebars at the Cannes Film Festival, I have to admit, I didn’t even know the Association for Independent Cinema category existed. But alas it does, and last year, "Insecure" starring Reda Kateb and Adele Exarchopoulos screened, and as you can probably tell, there wasn’t much fanfare around the picture. But it has already opened in cinemas abroad, and continues to rollout, and though this international trailer has been online for a couple of months, it’s fresh to our eyes.
Directed by Marianne Tardieu, the film follows a nursing student, who earns money as a security guard, who crosses paths with a young animation student. Here’s the official synopsis: Chérif (Reda Kateb, ZERO DARK THIRTY), in his thirties and having moved back in with his parents, is trying to pass the nursing exam. In the meantime, he works a job as a security guard to get by. He meets a woman he likes, Jenny (Adèle Exarchopolous, BLUE IS THE WARMEST COLOR), but the kids from the ‘hood who hang out at the mall where he works are starting to get to him. To get them off his back, he agrees to tip off a friend about an upcoming delivery. In the course of that night, Chérif’s life goes off the rails. INSECURE is a subtle and honest suspense film about a man whose insecurities push him to desperate and dark lengths.

There’s no U.S. distributor lined up for this one yet, so you might have to keep your eyes on the festival circuit. Watch below (sorry, no English subs). [George Roussos]
