Okay, so maybe we’re being flippant, but with Liam Neeson imposing a serious voiceover as he tries to stay alive in frigid conditions while fighting off kidnappers identity thieves wolves, we can’t help but be reminded of the Luc Besson produced thriller. But that said, once you take away the hokey emotional stuff? “The Grey” looks like it could be pretty fun.
While it was previously reported that the latest from Joe Carnahan might get an Oscar consideration run for Liam Neeson, we don’t see that happening based on the teaser trailer which has just dropped for the film. What we do see however, is the “Deliverance” and “Touching the Void” comparisons that have been tossed around. The story follows a group of pipeline workers in Alaska who are flying back to civilization after being remote for a number of months. The 737 they’re on goes down, and they are hunted by a pack of rogue wolves. Filming on location in Canada during the winter, there is no denying Carnahan has nailed the cold landscape and the glowing eyes of the lupines in the dark certainly delivers some authentic thrills. If this can stay gritty and real, this could be the kind of man vs. nature thriller we haven’t seen in ages. So fingers are definitely crossed.
Dallas Roberts, James Badge Dale, Dermot Mulroney, Frank Grillo, Nonso Anozie and Joe Anderson co-star in the movie which will hit theaters on January 27, 2012. Check out the trailer below.
