“Game over.” “Close it down.” “You have no idea who you’re messing with.” “How did you get this number?” “Now the gloves come off.” “You really are one crazy son of a bitch.” Yep, those are just some of the wheezy lines uttered in the latest trailer for “The Killer Elite,” a film that looks like it was cobbled together from bits and pieces of every third-rate 1980s action movie you’ve ever seen.
So, who does The Stafe play this time? Well, he’s the world’s most skilled special-ops agent (obviously) who comes out of self-imposed exile to put together a team to rescue his former mentor, played by Robert De Niro. Clive Owen is the villain and you can tell that mostly because or his porny mustache. So how eye-rolling is this trailer? Well how about the most tired cliché of every action movie: a scene where the baddie has a chance to kill our hero — bound to a chair no less — but because he goes on and on talking, the protagonist manages to escape (in his case by jumping out of a window). Yeah, it’s gonna be one of those movies. But not everything is lifeless as we get to see De Niro wielding a pretty nifty gun and looking pretty damn happy to be blowing shit up, and we have a feeling his presence will be one of the very few joys to be had in the flick.
