It took a bit longer than expected, but with Warner Bros. now going full throttle on the marketing campaign for Tim Burton's "Dark Shadows" we're likely going to be seeing a lot over the next six weeks leading up to the film's release date, and bit more footage has landed online today.
A brand new TV spot has arrived (via CinemaBlend), and though it runs a brief 30 sec. we get a good handful of new scenes including Johnny Depp's Barnabas Collins having a drink from a construction worker, discovering the golden arches of McDonald's, and being surprised that, after waking up from hundreds of years of slumber, women are now doctors. It's pretty amusing stuff. And this isn't the only bit of promo for the movie as over the weekend, Hero Complex ran an interview with the director who revealed that it was the quality of the show that drew him to the project, so much as the potential it had.
“I think you could say it was actually awful,” Burton said about the cult TV show. “It’s a different animal. If I go back and watch something like ‘Star Trek,’ it’s not that hard to analyze what the appeal was, and even if the show is dated you identify what it was that made it work. The ‘Dark Shadows’ appeal was a little more abstract. What I loved about it was the fact that it was a melodramatic soap opera, and, well, that flies in the face of any modern studio’s interests as far as moviemaking. But what we’ve gone for is a mixture, and that’s always what I’ve been interested in; I think most of my movies are mixtures of light and dark and serious things and things that have humor in them.”
Indeed all those elements do seem to be at play here, and this is definitely right in the director's sweet spot. "Dark Shadows" opens on May 11th. Watch the spot below.
