Watch: Lars Von Trier's 1971 Short Film 'En Blomst'

nullNext year will bring with it Lars Von Trier's next provocative effort, "The Nymphomaniac," but lest you think it will be one you can enjoy….alone…Stellan Skarsgard puts that notion to rest. "When we call this a porno, it's meant ironically, but irony doesn't work well in print. The film is sexually explicit — but, believe me, it will be a very, very bad wanking movie," he told THR. So while we wait for that movie to arrive, fans of the director can travel back in time a little bit.

Understanding the movies Von Trier sets out to make, and what he means to communicate, sometimes means knowing a bit about the man himself, and even his earliest works showed signs of what was to come. The wonders of the internet have made a very early Lars Von Trier short film, "En Blomst," available for your eyes. The 1971 film, shot by the then 15-year-old director who was going as Lars Trier, shows signs of the sensibility for a bit of shock that he would develop later on. The music choices and even the "plot" all seem like ingredients he would use in later efforts, but mostly, this seven-minute movie is a nice peek of a director developing his skills. Give it a whirl below.
