With “Game Of Thrones” wrapping up last night, we all need a new TV obsession. There are a few potentials out there: “Preacher” remains strong (if a little slow), “UnREAL”’s having a solid second season, and “Mr. Robot” starts in a few weeks. The one we’re most hopeful for, though, is a little further off, but a new glimpse has gotten us just as amped as ever.
“The Get Down” is the first TV series from Baz Luhrmann, director of “Moulin Rouge!” and “Romeo & Juliet,” and it’s hitting Netflix in August. A 70s-set, music-packed coming-of-age tale, it might seem on the surface to be treading similar territory to the recently cancelled, little-missed “Vinyl,” but should in fact be quite different, focusing less on middle-aged white dudes and more on the streets, with the show focused on the rise of hip-hop (though disco and punk will likely feature too).

The first part of the first season (unusually for Netflix, it’s being split, with the first six eps landing first) will arrive in about six weeks. And as if knowing that “Game Of Thrones” was leaving a vacuum, Netflix dropped a new trailer this morning. It’s almost all new footage, and what’s more, it features a glimpse of a new song by the show’s Executive Producer, hip-hop legend Nas.
It continues to look great, even if this isn’t quite as goosebumps-inducing as the longer, earlier trailer, which was admittedly much better. Justice Smith, Herizen Guardiola, Shameik Moore, Skylan Brooks, T.J. Brown Jr, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Mamoudou Athie, Jimmy Smits, Giancarlo Esposito, Jaden Smith, Yolonda Ross, Aabryna Guevara and Daveed Diggs will star in the show, and you can check it out from August 12th.
