James Franco, Albert Maysles, Lance Bangs & More Tapped To Direct Videos For R.E.M.
While “The Green Hornet” was a forgettable comic book movie marred by more than a few problems, director Michel Gondry did get to sneak in some of his distinctive style from time-to-time including an ambitious split screen sequence, one of the few highlights of the film. But overall, it was a Gondry film in name only. Well, for those seeking the wickedly lo-fi creativity of the director that put him on the map, look no further than the latest video for The Living Sisters (via Wired). Helmed by Gondry, the triple split screen video is a charming tale about the birth of a baby that features earthquakes, fires, bikers and enough no-budget effects for ten videos. It’s winning, warming and a reminder of how good Gondry can be.
Meanwhile, R.E.M. is still releasing records and for their latest they’re getting a bunch of names to direct videos for every song on the album “Collapse Into Now.” James Franco (of course), Lance Bangs, famed documentarian Albert Maysles and indie filmmaker Jem Cohen are among the directors who will be turning in videos according to NME. One video has already dropped for “Uberlin” starring “Kick-Ass” star Aaron Johnson and directed by his fiancée Sam Taylor-Wood (“Nowhere Boy“). It’s pretty much the same idea as the “Lotus Flower” video by Radiohead, but this time, it’s Johnson dancing on the streets of London. Take a look at both videos below.
