Firstly, if you don’t know Neko Case, get thee to your depository of fine music, pick up her latest The Worse Things Get, The Harder I Fight, The Harder I Fight, The More I Love You and work backwards from there. You might not tell from her literate, gorgeous and often heart shattering music alone that Case also has a pretty wicked sense of humor too. Well, that goes on full display with "These Aren’t The Droids."
The song, recorded for comedy compilation 2776: A Musical Journey Through America’s Past, Present, And Future, pairs up Case with regular collaborator Kelly Hogan, with the duo taking dead aim at comic book culture, specifically, bro-centered comic book culture, where the future that’s dreamed up is always "boooooooring" and kinda like Maxim. It’s irreverent and pretty funny stuff, with the pair humorously lamenting the plain lack of imagination the genre finds itself mired in from time to time, particularly from guys who dig sexy aliens or who nervously and nerdily obsess over the arrangement of their comics on the shelf. Meanwhile, Case and Hogan’s own fantasy suggestions are pretty outrageous and great too. It’s well done and quite funny all around, so give it a spin below. [AV Club]
