Filmmaker Kevin Smith has a rather practical outlook on life. His last film, the Canadian-set horror movie “Tusk,” was a celebratory comeback movie after being away from films for over three years. But the rejoicing narrative changed on him when the movie hit theaters and bombed. Still, he’s sanguine about it, as he revealed last summer on an episode of Michael Ian Black’s “How To Be Amazing” podcast. The filmmaker said “Tusk” may have been a failure, but the bright side is what it produced: creatively rejuvenated, Smith wrote three more movies on the back of "Tusk," and its release lead to all of them being financed. So yes, a “Clerks 3” is on the way, as is “Mallbrats,” but before that you’ll get the second installment of what Smith is calling his True North trilogy.
Titled “Yoga Hosers,” it’s a comedy horror spin-off of “Tusk,” once again set in Canada. The film centers on Colleen and Colleen, 15-year-old yoga nuts who have an after-school job at a Manitoba convenience store. When an ancient evil rises from beneath Canada’s crust and releases an army of monsters and threaten their big invitation to a senior party, the Colleens join forces with a legendary man-hunter from Montreal named Guy Lapointe. Lapointe is, of course — *minor spoiler alert if you haven’t seen the movie already*— the same character that Johnny Depp cameo’d as in “Tusk”
“Yoga Hosers” co-stars his daughter, Lily-Rose Depp, and Smith’s daughter, Harley Quinn Smith, and features supporting appearances by Justin Long, Haley Joel Osment, Génesis Rodríguez, Tony Hale, Natasha Lyonne, Adam Brody, Tyler Posey, plus Jason Mewes and Kevin Smith himself (some are already speculating Jay and Bob will turn up in the film).
With its Sundance premiere coming, a new clip for “Yoga Hosers” has landed. Is it another “Tusk,” an improvement, or more of the same? Watch yourself and judge below. As a bonus, listen to the full “How To Be Amazing” podcast below as well.
