There’s no need to speculate further. As we guessed/hoped in our Cannes wish-list piece, “Mad Max: Fury Road” will make its world premiere at Cannes. But it won’t play in competition, and despite being the subject of the first official Cannes announcement, it won’t be the opening night film either. If we’re gonna split hairs about the announcement: is this a good sign? Another thing to consider: ‘Fury Road’ at Cannes isn’t exactly that special. It premieres on the Croisette on May 14th and then it goes wide in theaters across most of the world the next day, so Cannes has all of 24 hours before the rest of the world sees the film. Drilling down deeper, this means press in New York and L.A., probably the U.K. and other territories will have seen the movie in advance anyhow. Will embargoes even hold before the movie screens in France? Does the world premiere butted up next to regular release mean much? Decide for yourself.
In case you’ve forgotten, ‘Fury Road’ is led by Tom Hardy, Charlize Theron and Nicholas Hoult, and is once again directed by ‘Mad Max’ originator George Miller. Here’s the official synopsis:
An apocalyptic story set in the furthest reaches of our planet, in a stark desert landscape where humanity is broken, and almost everyone is crazed fighting for the necessities of life. Within this world exist two rebels on the run who just might be able to restore order. There’s Max, a man of action and a man of few words, who seeks peace of mind following the loss of his wife and child in the aftermath of the chaos. And Furiosa, a woman of action and a woman who believes her path to survival may be achieved if she can make it across the desert back to her childhood homeland.
A couple new teaser spots have been released, and while they’re brief, they are also super visceral, intense and explosive. If the entire movie is like this, Warner Bros. better keep emergency medics on hand in case. “Mad Max: Fury Road” will be unleashed on May 15th.
