If cable has proven to be a boon to dramatic storytelling, that is no less true for comedies as well. Shows like "It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia" or the unjustly cancelled "Bored To Death" deliver the kind of irreverance and wit you're just not going to see on network broadcasting. HBO's newly unveiled "Girls" is a further example of funny material that moves away from standard sitcom tropes and as fans of Louis C.K. already know, he's been delivering the goods with "Louie" for two seasons already.
This summer, a new batch of episodes are on the way with "Louie" heading into its third season, and to kick things off a lovely teaser has arrived paying tribute to Woody Allen's glorious opening montage in "Manhattan." While Louie doesn't pontificate on the wonders and awe of the Big Apple, it does deliver a score that is close to, but not quite, "Rhapsody In Blue" by George Gershwin. And it ends on a pitch-perfect comedic note.
All told, it's a pretty nice little spot all round. "Louie" returns on June 28th on FX. [IndieWire]
