"I wasn’t really looking for something of this size," Angelina Jolie told the LA Times earlier this year about taking on "Unbroken" for her sophomore directorial feature. "But the way Laura [Hillenbrand] writes about him is the way I like to read about people. It was like I was witnessing the birth of a man — it was something I wanted to tell my sons about."
And the "him" in question is Louis Zamperini, and his story is rather incredible. Co-scripted by the Coen Brothers, and based on a true story, this awards season drama tells the story of the former Olympian Zamperini (Jack O’Connell) who, along with two other crewmen, survived in a raft for 47 days after a near-fatal plane crash in WWII—only to be caught by the Japanese Navy and sent to a prisoner-of-war camp. You can practically see the light of Oscar reflecting off this thing. And Universal believe they’ve got a contender here too, starting the promo train for this all the way back during the Winter Olympics, and now dropping a new trailer months before release.
Co-starring Domhnall Gleeson, Garrett Hedlund, Finn Wittrock, John Magaro, Alex Russell and Miyavi, "Unbroken" opens on Christmas Day.
