“Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom” premiered at TIFF last weekend, but if you didn’t realize it, don’t feel too badly. The first and only press on Saturday afternoon had the plug pulled after 45 minutes due to some technical errors, so when was it rescheduled for? 10:15 PM that night, and let’s just say, the number of press who were eager to carve out time for a two-and-a-half-hour film, after an already packed day of movies, was pretty slim. We’ll have our verdict soon, but until then, you can see a brand new trailer for the movie.
Idris Elba stars as the freedom fighter, and while buzz about the movie about Toronto was muted at best, the general feeling from early word is that the Justin Chadwick film is very rote and routine, which we suppose isn’t exactly a shocker. One already wonders what the Oscar prospects are, if any are left, though we reckon if Elba at least manages to shine, Harvey Weinstein will put together a decent campaign for him.
Take a long walk to theaters to see this when it opens in limited release on November 29th.
