It’s going to be hard for “Star Trek Beyond” to escape the sadness of the death of one of the film’s stars, Anton Yelchin, who passed away just a week ago in a tragic accident. But short of pushing the release date back, which is unlikely this close, it’s going to have to be business as usual for the movie, with a July opening bearing down, and a new trailer for the movie just arrived.

Scored by an original new Rihanna song, “Sledgehammer,” it’s a more dour affair than previous cuts (no Beastie Boys to be found here), but has plenty of visual spectacle here to compensate, and new glimpses of the characters played by Sofia Boutella and Idris Elba, joining Chris Pine, Simon Pegg (who co-wrote here), Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, John Cho and Yelchin.
The 2009 reboot was so good, and 2013’s “Into Darkness” so bad, that we’ve been rooting for a bounceback here. We’re not completely convinced that’s what we’ll see, but it looks as good as can be hoped; maybe in a summer of disappointments, this will prove to be a late highlight? We’ll find out on July 22nd.
