Every time Nicolas Cage appears in another barely-released, cheapo movie, the question runs through our heads: what WON’T Nicolas Cage do? Well, we came across the answer recently: a quality TV show. The debut of Bryan Fuller’s very good “American Gods” reminded us that late last year, Cage gave an interview to the LA Times where he revealed that he’d been offered the role of Mr. Wednesday on the show, eventually played (awesomely) by Ian McShane.
But Cage said that he turned the role down, saying that “the idea of being stuck in one city for months on end playing a part — while that might be interesting, I could see where I might start to feel trapped.” Instead, Cage made what we’re sure is a highly creatively fulfilling project like “Inconceivable,” another basically straight-to-VOD thriller which just debuted a trailer.
This time, the film is, like the recent “Unforgettable,” a nod to the yuppies-in-peril thriller genre that we looked at in a feature a few weeks back. This one sees a couple (Gina Gershon and Cage) take in a nanny (Nicky Whelan), a woman with a young daughter, only for the new arrival to become unhinged when she forms a bond with their own child.
It looks, frankly, dreadful, and beneath even Cage’s recent run, but we suppose it helps him make a dent in that hefty tax bill he has. Also starring Faye Dunaway, the film will open in at least one theater, and on VOD on June 30th.
