Nicolas Cage is kind of everywhere these days. And as he promised back in a 2014 Berlin interview with The Playlist, the actor has been trying out all styles and trying to get back to his indie roots. He wasn’t joking. He made David Gordon Green’s indie “Joe” which was one of Cage’s best performances in a long time and they he doubled up for two Paul Schrader films, last year’s “Dying of the Light,” and this year’s Cannes picture, “Dog Eat Dog” co-starring Willem Dafoe.
But Cage’s taste, as he noted, is very eclectic and he likes to star in movies of high art and low art to switch things up. We’re not sure exactly where “USS Indianapolis: Men of Courage” fits. It’s the harrowing true story of the crew of the USS Indianapolis, who were stranded in the Philippine Sea for five days after delivering the atomic weapons that would eventually end WWII. Now that sounds like, if not a blockbuster, a movie of large scale. But to be honest, it’s a Hannibal Classics Films and Patriot Pictures production which is rather small and director Mario Van Peebles, with no disrespect intended, has mostly directed B-movies or small TV projects — though he’s directed episodes of “Empire” and the upcoming “Roots” mini series. Not to mention that “New Jack City” is a classic and “Posse” was underrated.
So yes, maybe a comeback? Who knows. Regardless, the first trailer for “USS Indianapolis” has arrived and the movie co-stars Tom Sizemore, Thomas Jane, Matt Lanter and Cody Walker.
