It has been three years since Paul Greengrass‘ last film, the lukewarm “Green Zone,” and while in the interim there was much chatter about another return to ‘Bourne,’ the director himself has buckled down and hit the open water for his next effort “Captain Phillips,” and damn, does it ever look good.
The first trailer has arrived, and while it boasts Greengrass’ trademark ability to sustain some serious thrills, this one is based on a true story with none other than Tom Hanks in the lead. He plays the titular character, who made worldwide headlines back in 2009 when he gave himself up to Somali pirates in exchange for the safety of his crew after his boat was attacked. That courage is on full display here with Hanks playing both brave and vulnerable with the requisite chops that looks like this could easily be another Oscar contending role. All around, this looks like bracing, exciting stuff. We’re impressed.
Co-starring Catherine Keener, Max Martini, John Magaro and more, “Captain Phillips” docks on October 11th. [via The Film Stage]
